About the workshop

This workshop will be an extension of exercises with words and images, of understanding how certain texts and cultural phrases nudge us to scribble and draw and initiate a visual language. The workshop will focus on the spontaneous act of texts selection, those that will connect with certain memories of the participants and bring out fragments of the participants experiences and sensibilities through both conversations, motifs, and elements that they might want to draw about. Emergence of micro, independent narrative strings, imaginary or otherwise, will be encouraged and observed. Since an understanding of oneself often leads to an understanding of the other, we must fully embrace our own nature to find any true connection. The words and images are meant to bring awareness to our shifting states that involves both internal experiences and external stimuli fundamental to our sense of self and surrounding reality.

About the artist

Shweta, initially trained as a printmaker, has been working with an eclectic range of expressions which include illustrations, painting, calligraphing, working on abandoned books, mentoring, and continuing with her studio practice in Delhi (NCR), after completing her Masters in Fine Arts from Kala Bhavana, Viswa Bharati, Shantiniketan. Her visual language often accompanied with text, expresses her experiences that resonate with deeper emotions and often unseen realities, capturing the essence of her journey in the form of visual journaling, indirectly creating a therapeutic realm. Shweta was born in UP into an Indian Army officer's family with Kashmiri origin. The defence family upbringing also meant frequent uprooting and replanting in different places across the country. It also exposed her to different cultures and ideas, thus evaluating cultural and social responses from diverse geographical perspectives. In 2000 she moved to Delhi where she joined the Lalit Kala Akademi's Garhi Artists' Studios before shifting her base to faridabad in 2006. She has also facilitated composition module for M.Design foundation students at NID, Gandhinagar as visiting faculty.
